Shaun R. Lumachi Memorial Scholarship Fund

In Memory of Shaun R. Lumachi

September 10, 1978 - December 3, 2011

Kyle Fowler is dedicated to his community and has spent hundreds of hours volunteering at a local no kill shelter and with the Milo Foundation in Richmond. He was a member of the Honors Society’s Literacy Project which aids elementary students to improve their reading skills. He is an active Police Explorer through the Pinole Police Department and participated in high school football, golf, chess and cross-country. He is ranked 30 out of 240 students in his class and has maintained a 3.9 GPA. Starting in the Fall he will be attending the California Maritime Academy pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. We are very proud of his achievements, unlimited potential and believe he has the power to achieve greatness in life.

The Shaun R. Lumachi Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide opportunities to graduating seniors from Pinole Valley High School, who hold, feel, and have a thirst for knowledge, and who pledge to nurture their own impact to make a positive change in our society and in our world.

The Shaun R. Lumachi Memorial Scholarship Fund was created through the generous donations from Shaun's family, friends and local businesses. On September 10, 2012 (Shaun’s birthday) the first memorial golf tournament was held in his memory. The primary goal is to provide scholarships to a Pinole Valley High School Senior who has exhibited excellence in their studies and has shown leadership qualities throughout their high school years. Shaun had a commitment to higher education and was a mentor to many students throughout California. He found the passion within himself to not only give back to his community, but to serve the common good during his short life. Therefore,  the Shaun R. Lumachi Memorial Scholarship Fund would like to continue his legacy by annually organizing fundraisers that will fund college scholarships to further the education of an individual from Pinole Valley High School in loving memory of Shaun.

Shaun was an amazing son, brother, husband, uncle, and friend. He was born on September 10, 1978 and raised in the Bay Area. While attending Pinole Valley High School, Shaun served on the PVHS Youth Commission, was involved in conflict management, and designed the PVHS Senior Times Newsletter. Shaun was also a member of the golf team, played baseball for Pinole Hercules Little League and was Senior Class President. He graduated with honors from Pinole Valley High School in 1996. Shaun continued his education at California State University, Sacramento where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government. While at California State University, Sacramento, he was elected Chair of the California State Student Association (CSSA) which serves as the statewide student body government for all the 23 campuses of the California State University system. In 1999, Shaun received the CSSA Chair's Award for Excellence in Student Advocacy. Nearly ten years later, CSSA honored him as CSSA's 2008 Alumnus of the Year. Shaun was also a proud alumnus of the Theta Xi Chapter of Sigma Chi International Fraternity.

Shaun utilized his education as he began his career in 2002 as the Vice President of Government Affairs for the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. Shaun then started his Chamber Advocacy consulting business in 2003 as a public policy consultant. In 2007, he co-founded the online publication, Long Beach Post, which covers city news, government and sports which they later expanded into a successful printed medium. Shaun was an active member of the Long Beach community serving as a member of nearly a dozen nonprofit boards of directors. In 2007, Shaun was honored by Long Beach Magazine as one of the "Most Innovative Minds in Long Beach." Shaun loved the game of baseball and was a baseball umpire for many years. He had worked at all levels of baseball up to the NCAA PAC-10 and all levels of softball up to the Western Regional Little League World Series. In 2009, Shaun married his longtime girlfriend Deziré and lived in the Belmont Shore community of Long Beach.

On December 3, 2011 while Shaun was on a business trip in Florida representing Long Beach for the city’s Workforce Investment Board. During the trip a horrible accident took place when a truck traveling in the opposite direction drifted into oncoming traffic. The driver of the truck had fallen asleep and hit the driver side backseat passenger area in the car where Shaun was sitting. Shaun tragically died at the age of 33.
